ABOUT ME
My name is Tom Standing. I'm 23 years old from the North East of England. I graduated with a game design degree from Teesside University in 2020. I've always had a passion for video games and creativity. I have many interesting ideas that I would love to develop and share with you here.

My other interests include digital illustration, piano, and Japanese language.
More about me
I have played video games my entire life but it wasn't until late secondary school that I started PC gaming. The huge range of indie titles, active communities, mods and tools were all new to me, and there was so much to discover. I felt inspired. I began to consider a career in games development and chose to study computer science in college. I then made my first Unreal Engine project during my application to university, which was a simple platformer using the third person template. I showed this project at my interview which helped secure my place to study computer games design at Teesside University.

I enjoy working on many experimental projects which each present a new challenge. Each project teaches me something new which is a fun way of expanding and improving my game development abilities. I try to model my own 3D assets which develops my skills in Blender, create my own 2D pixel art assets which improves my general artistic ability, and tackle a range of scripting challenges to become more technically confident in engine. Some projects might focus only on a dialog system; others on driving mechanics. The intention is that each project has an element that has improved my development abilities.

My favourite games are Bloodborne and Outer Wilds. I find that both of these games have an interesting method of delivering an impactful storyline, while both remaining unique in their style of gameplay and theme. Bloodborne delivers challenging and satisfying combat in a unique Lovecraftian horror setting, while Outer Wilds takes a fresh approach to space exploration by creating a fully simulated solar system with a mystery to uncover.

Other than game development, I play some piano. I mostly play classical pieces and tracks from my favourite games. You might hear some of my playing in future projects. I've always been interested in making my own music for the games I create. I also study Japanese in my spare time which is difficult and requires a lot of dedication, but I love the way it sounds so I'm determined to learn. I'd like to visit Japan one day to experience the culture and meet new people while being able to speak the language.

Thank you for reading about me. I hope you enjoy my work!
